题目:Stated versus Applied Gender Norms: Evidence from Randomized Work–Family Vignettes in China
内容摘要:We measure gender norms in work–family conflict by randomizing the gender of the person described in a vignette, and compare what this recovers with what conventional survey questions report. In a survey experiment with 1,918 Chinese adults, each respondent judged seven scenarios spanning four family roles (spouse, adult child, child-in-law, parent) and three workplace roles (leader, team member, subordinate), with the character's gender randomized independently in each scenario. For every scenario, as well as in the direct attitude questions, we elicit what the respondent personally thinks the person or men and women should do and, using a Krupka and Weber (KW) coordination incentive, what they believe most others would say. Asked directly, a majority endorses equal responsibility both within the family and at work; and on the question of work--family priorities, 51.6 percent give men and women the same prescription, against 42.3 percent who prescribe work priority for men and family priority for women. In the vignettes, we find significant character-gender effects, indicating that the same respondents apply a traditional gendered standard, in six of the seven roles, the exception being spouse. The effect appears even among those who state that workplace responsibility should be shared equally, and even among those who state that men should bear more responsibility at home. It is strongest among older respondents and among those who directly prescribe work priority for men and family priority for women. In the direct questions, perceived norms measured with the KW incentive are markedly more traditional than personal beliefs; in the vignettes the two provide similar results.
